On Saturday, the 26th of March, the Channel – as part of its Healing Word project – visited Zawan, in Jos South local government area of Plateau State Nigeria; where it organised a free medical outreach to bring healthcare to indigent people in the community.
Even in communities where hospitals are available, people tend to avoid seeking medical care because of the costs. This leads to late detection of disease, preventable suffering and reduced chances of survival. The Catholic Archdiocese runs a hospital within the Zawan community but for the cost of treatment and drugs, many of the residents stay away from the hospital.
At the medical outreach, the Channels medical team; consisting two doctors, six nurses and eighteen nursing students attended to over 200 patients in the community. The outreach consisted group health talks, one-on-one consultations, diagnosis and treatment.
The local hospital, Our Lady of Apostles Hospital, partnered with the Channel by providing publicity and the use of their premises. Through it’s administrator, Rev. Sr Lucy Esedebe, the hospital expressed their gratitude to the Channel for bringing the Medical Outreach to Zawan. They requested that we organise more of such outreaches throughout the year as it is the only way some of the residents would get access to healthcare.
The Channel has executed the Healing Word project, at least once anually, since its inception in 2003. The project partners with hospitals, health workers and local communities to take the Word out to the sick and bring healing to the communities!
Through donations from friends and partners like you, the Channel extends care to the sick through prayer, hospital visitations and medical outreaches.
…I was sick, and ye visited me…
